Towny communities organize land and social play around towns, residents and sometimes nations. Before buying a plot, read the tax and upkeep rules, the permissions you receive and the conditions under which land can be lost. A town is an agreement with other players as well as a protected area.

What to check on a Towny server
Understand recurring costs
Ask about resident taxes, plot taxes and town upkeep. Compare the cost with realistic in-game earnings and find out what happens when an account cannot pay.
Check plot permissions
Clarify whether you own, rent or merely have building access to a plot. Review container, resident and outsider permissions before moving valuable items.
Ask about conflict rules
Some Towny communities are peaceful; others add war systems. Read the server’s actual conflict rules rather than treating town claims as permanent protection.
Plan for inactivity
Check what happens when a mayor or resident stops playing. Ask about succession, eviction, town deletion and whether abandoned land becomes unprotected.

Towny server FAQs
Does Towny always mean peaceful play?
No. The plugin can be configured in different ways and used alongside war systems. Check PvP, explosions and siege rules on the community you join.
Can a mayor charge residents taxes?
That may be enabled and limited by server settings. Read a town’s terms and ask about recurring charges before accepting an invitation.
What happens if a town cannot pay upkeep?
The consequences depend on configuration. Ask the owner how unpaid upkeep affects the town and its claimed land.
Do I own a plot permanently?
Not necessarily. Plot access can depend on residency, payments and local rules. Confirm the difference between owning a plot and being permitted to build there.
Can I start my own town?
Check the creation cost, minimum requirements and ongoing expenses. Joining an existing town first can help you learn the rules.
What is a nation?
In Towny, nations can group towns, but diplomacy and war behavior depend on the server’s setup. Read the community guide for the features actually enabled.
